Sluice Pad

Lock-keeper's notes · how much flows to side work

Set the gate before the water moves.

Sluice Pad is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. On a canal, a sluice gate decides how much water leaves the main channel. Side work is the same: each week, decide how far the gate opens, so your job and home keep enough to run on.

A canal with a main channel labelled job and home flowing left to right. A side sluice gate opens onto a smaller channel labelled side work. A gauge beside the gate shows three settings: closed for busy weeks, half open for ordinary weeks and open for quiet weeks. The gate is set to half open, so the main channel stays full while a modest flow runs to the side.JOB + HOME · MAIN CHANNELSIDE WORKGATE SETTINGClosed · busy weekHalf · ordinary weekOpen · quiet week

The gate

Three settings. Chosen once a week.

Most weeks don't need a new plan. They need one decision: how far does the gate open this week? Closed when work is heavy or you're unwell; half for an ordinary week; open when things are genuinely quiet.

Choosing the setting on Sunday, before the week starts, makes it easier to turn down side work in a heavy week, and to tell clients early when replies will be slower.

Flow table

How different side work behaves at each setting.

Some work can be paused with the gate; some keeps flowing whatever you set. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.

Flood warnings

What can overwhelm the channel.

  • FEES

    The rate isn't what arrives.

Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.

  • TAX

    Small amounts still count.

Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.

  • FATIGUE

    Late nights add up.

Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.

  • CONTRACT

Your employer may have a say.

Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.

  • FRAUD

Offers that cost you to start.

Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
